The “biggest party of the summer” has been the phrase that Summerslam has been associated with for years. The card on paper looked good, with the main event being the Fatal 4 Way for the Universal Championship between Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns, Braun Strowman, and Samoa Joe. But while the main event was incredible, the rest of the show looked to be a bit rugged. The review down below should help you guys out.
Best Match of the Night: The Fatal 4-Way for the Universal Championship
This had all the ingredients to be a great main event. German suplexes, running body slams through the tables (and burying Brock Lesnar with the third), superman punches and Coquina clutches. After Lesnar was carted off a stretcher, the three remaining competitors stole the show, as it was an equal showing during the middle of the match. The main reason this was the best match was because the tempo of the match shifted from one competitor to another, and all four, even Lesnar before he left and after he returned, gave their all.
Worst Match of the Night: Randy Orton def. Rusev
….in 11 seconds! Seriously!?! Officially, at least. There was action before the Match began, as Rusev jumped Orton from behind as the Viper made his way to the ring. But when the bell rang, we get RKO, pin, squash match. I was expecting at least some kind of match between the two. Since coming back from injury, Rusev has been embarrassed by WWE veterans. You would expect something from the Bulgarian Brute. This match just sucked, it could've been a whole lot better.
Moment of the Night: Finn Balor’s Entrance
You have no idea how bad I was hoping that the Demon King would make an appearance after being a no-show in the Fatal-5 Way at Extreme Rules. But starting off with a demented version of “He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands”, with the ba-bump in between each line, it was a hell of an entrance. Only the demonic version of the Irish wrestler can play mind games that are similar to Bray Wyatt’s. The Demon King entrance is one of the most interesting and visually impressive entrances in WWE, and it always get a huge pop from the WWE Universe. Balor gets the win at Summerslam, and his entrance hopefully will give WWE the go for more Demon King appearances.
Overall Grade: B+
The fatal 4 way, the U.S. title match between Styles and Owens, and the WWE Championship match between Nakamura and Mahal (until the end) were the matches that stood out. But the remainder of the matches were either par, sub-par, or terrible. It wasn’t a terrible show by any means necessary, but you would expect one of the “Big 4” shows to be better than what we saw. If there were more par matches than sub-par matches, then I would contend that the grade would be an A-. But there are more positives than negatives to be taken from this years edition of Summerslam.
